What is spiritual direction?

Where do I find God in my everyday experiences? What is my prayer all about? How do I integrate my relationship with family . . . friends . . . community . . . parish . . . ministry . . . God and Jesus?

Spiritual direction helps us face these, and other experiences, which surface in our longing and desire to be the person we truly are.

It is in learning to listen, with the help of a spiritual director, that we come to know ourselves and God who lives in us.

In spiritual direction, relationship with God – not with the director – is the primary focus. The role of the spiritual director is to keep the focus on the relationship with God, and to help people see their life experience in the context of that relationship. Spiritual direction involves a sharing, listening and sensitivity to God and to God’s Word.

In spiritual direction the focus is based on the participant’s relationship with God and not the God perceived by the spiritual director.
