Over 45's

At our Over 45's Christmas Party on November 24th 2004, we also celebrated 25 years since this group was formed. Anne Ots, one of the foundation members reminded us of the history of how the group was formed.

Twenty-five years ago there were few older people in the parish. A group of young mums decided to meet after Mass once a month to have lunch with them. Many of the young mums did not have grandparents around so it was hoped to benefit both groups.

The first Mass for the group was held on Wednesday 14th November 1979 at 11:00am. After a lot of discussion the name "over 45's" was chosen. At first only women attended, but in time the men started coming along and John Grannall took over the running of the group.

Gradually the young mums stopped attending and the group took on a life of its own. Since John Grannall there have been other enthusiastic leaders keeping the group goind: Ursula Southwell (who gave us the prayer which we pray after Mass), then Viv Thompson, Margaret Ohlin and now Veronica Brennan.

We gather together on the last
Wednesday of the month at 11.00am for a Mass followed by a light luncheon in the parish centre.
