Faith expressed in self-giving service
“Increase our faith!” the apostles said to the Lord.
This plea from the disciples sounds earnest, even humble. But Jesus’ response is unexpectedly pointed: even faith the size of a mustard seed can uproot a mulberry tree and plant it in the sea. He then follows this with a story about servants doing their duty, without expecting praise.
Why this reply? The disciples don’t specify what kind of faith they want increased. Faith in God? Faith in themselves? Faith in others? Perhaps, as Jesus’ response suggests, it's all these together—because genuine faith, no matter how small, reshapes how we live. It grounds us in God, gives us courage to act, and calls us into humble, self-giving service.
Jesus is reminding his followers that faith is not primarily about achieving extraordinary spiritual power or certainty. Instead, it’s about trusting enough to live as God calls us to live—even when the path is hidden, hard, or humble. Faith is expressed not in flashy miracles but in quiet, steadfast service. The servant in Jesus’ parable doesn’t seek special recognition. He simply does what is required of him.
Likewise, discipleship isn't about being noticed or rewarded—it’s about living in response to God's love with faithfulness and humility.
This Gospel invites us to stop asking for "more" faith in the abstract, and instead to begin living the faith we already have—with trust, courage, and generous service. When we do, we may discover that even a seed-sized faith can move mountains—or at least, uproot a few mulberry trees.

The mustard seed
It is the smallest of all seeds, the Holy Gospel tells us; but it contains amazing expansive power. The same is true of our Saviour.
He appears insignificant to human eyes, despicable, unworthy of attention; but in his nature, heart and person, he possesses infinite strength. In him we find salvation and the graces necessary to make it operative. He gives us the Eucharist, that bread of the strong and source of blessings.

The Heart of Christ opierced on the Cross
The Carthusians, encouraged above all by Ludolph of Saxony, found in devotion to the Sacred Heart a means of growth in affection and closeness to Christ. All who enter through the wound of his heart are inflamed with love. Saint Catherine of Siena wrote that the Lord’s sufferings are impossible for us to comprehend, but the open heart of Christ enables us to have a lively personal encounter with his boundless love. “I wished to reveal to you the secret of my heart, allowing you to see it open, so that you can understand that I have loved you so much more than I could have proved to you by the suffering that I once endured”.
