Weekly Reflection

“ Where is the child who has been born king of the Jews? For we observed his star at its rising, and have come to pay him homage”. Matt 2:2

The incapacity to admire others seems to be a universal disease today. We see it everywhere, in the academic world, in professional circles of all kinds, and in church and family life. Children are still good at admiring, but, among the adults, there's little in the way of simple appreciative consciousness. We know how to criticise , but not how to admire.

Why? What's causing this? One of the defining traits of human maturity is the capacity to admire. Thomas Aquinas once stated that to withhold a compliment from someone is a sin because we are withholding food that this person needs to live. Admiring others also provides us with the food we ourselves need.

One of the reasons why we live with so much dissatisfaction, anger, bitterness, and depression is precisely because we no longer know how to admire. Without admiration we can never be happy - nor can we see straight, irrespective of how sophisticated, educated, scientifically-trained, aesthetically fined-tuned, or hermeneutically enlightened we are.

When we don't admire, we aren't seeing straight, pure and simple. When we are forever seeing what's wrong in others that speaks volumes about our own interior state. Whenever our world feels grey, whenever we feel bitter and short-changed, and whenever we feel frustrated with everything and everyone, we need to ask ourselves: "When was the last time I really admired someone?" "When was the last time I looked at anything or anyone with the gaze of admiration?"

God is never grey, depressed, and cynical, and God's first gaze at us, as both Scripture and the mystics assure us, is not one of critical disapproval but one of admiration.

Celebration of Divine Love (last stanza)

James McAuley

You gentle souls who sit contemplative

In the walled garden where the fountain flows,

And faint with longing have desire to live

But the brief flowering of the single rose,

Knowing that all you give

Into the keeping of your tender Lord

Shall be enriched and thousandfold restored:

Before the herons return

Abide the sharp frosts and the time of pruning;

For he shall come at last for whom you yearn

And deep and silent shall be your communing;

And if his summer heat of love should burn

Its victim with a sacrificial fire,

Rejoice: who knows what wanderer may turn,

Responsive to that fragrant hidden pyre!

In the Heart of Jesus, Michael

Notices

Christmas is a feast that can open the hearts of all of us to the presence of Christ. It puts before us the great qualities of innocence and hope that we need if we are to awaken to his light, and it fills us with confidence because it tells us that the old age has ended. The new age, indeed the new creation has begun and our point of departure for finding it every where is finding it a reality in our heart.

John Main

Gospel in a Nutshell

Jesus is recognised by wise men who come from a far country. They have relied on the guidance of a new star in the heavens, and are convinced that they need to follow this star, even though it leads them on a path that they do not know. Their faith, and ours, will finally lead us all to Jesus, who is king of all the nations of the world.

On a lighter note ...

A Sunday School Teacher asked her class
why Joseph and Mary took Jesus
with them to Jerusalem.
A samll child replied"
"They couldn't get a baby-sitter".

Thought for the Week

I found I had less and less to say,
until finally, I became silent,
and began to listen.
I discovvered in the silence
the voice of God.

Søren Kierkegaard
